BMW is entering a new phase with the 2027 X5, the fifth generation of the vehicle that founded the Sports Activity Vehicle category in 1999. This version introduces the first all-electric X5, called the iX5, alongside the familiar combustion and plug-in hybrid options, giving shoppers at BMW Montreal Centre more ways to match a drivetrain to how they actually drive. The exterior gets a taller front end and a redesigned kidney grille with an always-lit light signature, while the cabin is rebuilt around BMW's Panoramic iDrive system and new interior materials such as slate and crystal glass. For drivers navigating the Ville-Marie interchange or heading north on Autoroute 15, the same X5 nameplate can now be configured as a long-range electric SUV, a plug-in hybrid, or a traditional six-cylinder SAV. Full Canadian pricing and availability will be shared as the launch date gets closer.
The 2027 X5 wears a taller, more vertical front end than the outgoing model, anchored by a larger matte-finish BMW badge and a reworked kidney grille that stays lit around the clock. New double-X light icons fold the low beams, running lights, side lights, and turn signals into a single housing -- a first for the brand. The front apron shape changes with the powertrain: the iX5 gets a smooth, continuous panel, while the X5 40 xDrive and X5 50e xDrive keep horizontal air intakes. Buyers looking for a sportier look can step up to the M Sport Package or the M Sport Pro Package, both adding exterior trim and Adaptive M Suspension.
Viewed from the side, the SAV keeps a clean, uninterrupted profile thanks to flush window seals and new BMW Winglet door handles set into the B- and C-pillars, which work with the available power-operated doors and standard Soft Close feature. Matte black side skirts and sharply cut wheel arches frame wheel choices that stretch from a standard 21-inch design up to a 23-inch option, the largest ever offered on an X5. At the back, wide shoulders and a deeply recessed greenhouse improve airflow while slim rear lights carry the double-X theme through. Exterior colour choice runs to eleven shades, including five new for this generation.
Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive becomes the centrepiece of the redesigned cabin, pairing a free-cut 17.9-inch Central Display with BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects driving information across the base of the windshield. A 3D Head-Up Display is standard. Beneath the dash, a backlit accent strip runs door to door, shifting colour and brightness automatically or on command. Slate appears as a decorative surface for the first time on an X5 through the optional BMW Glass Controls package, which also brings crystal glass detailing to the gear selector.
Rear-seat space grows too, with a wheelbase stretched by roughly 61 mm (2.4 in) and a seatback angle set two degrees flatter for added knee room on longer drives, such as the run down Autoroute 40 toward the West Island. Standard seating uses heated sports seats trimmed in Veganza upholstery, offered in Black or Copper Brown, while the optional Premium Package adds massage function, ventilation, and four-way lumbar adjustment. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats include a through-loading system, and an optional 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Display lets the front-seat passenger stream video.
The headline addition to the 2027 lineup is the iX5 60 xDrive, BMW's first fully electric X5. It uses a rear-axle motor producing 325 horsepower and a front-axle motor adding 245 horsepower, for a total system output of 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque. Built on BMW's 800-volt Gen6 architecture, the iX5 has an estimated range of up to 700 kilometres (preliminary, based on BMW AG testing using EPA procedures). Fast-charging at up to 460 kW can take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes, and the iX5 also supports bidirectional charging.
For buyers who prefer a combustion engine, the X5 40 xDrive runs BMW's 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, now making 394 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque after gains from a new turbocharger. It reaches 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and tops out at an electronically limited 250 km/h. A 48V mild hybrid system adds up to 17 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque during acceleration. Between the two sits the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, pairing the six-cylinder engine with a 194-horsepower electric motor for a total system output of 483 horsepower and an estimated all-electric range of up to 70 kilometres.
BMW Operating System X underpins Panoramic iDrive, and because it's built for over-the-air updates, the X5 can gain new features long after it leaves the lot. Up to seven drivers can save their own settings through the BMW ID, and the enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant answers to natural speech after the "Hey BMW" prompt. Amazon's Alexa+ AI technology is expected to expand the assistant's abilities in Canada in 2027. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and BMW Digital Key Plus turns a compatible smartphone into a shareable vehicle key.
Driver assistance runs on BMW's Symbiotic Drive approach, keeping systems in the background until the driver needs them. Standard Driving Assistant Plus manages speed, following distance, and lane centring, and the optional Highway Assistant allows hands-free driving on approved highways up to 130 km/h. Standard safety features include Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, and Emergency Brake Assistant, which now factors in wildlife crossing the road. Parking Assistant Professional adds AI-supported space detection and Remote Control Parking, useful for the tighter parking found around downtown Montreal.
The 2027 X5 lineup starts with the X5 40 xDrive and its 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine paired with 48V mild hybrid assistance. The X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid adds electric-only range without leaving the combustion engine behind, while the iX5 60 xDrive introduces a fully electric option with an estimated 700 kilometres of range.
A V8-powered M Performance variant joins the lineup later in 2027, and a hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen is planned further out as BMW's first production hydrogen model. Every version can be dressed up with the M Sport Package or M Sport Pro Package, and BMW Individual Manufaktur paint finishes become available to special-order starting in April 2027.
The X5 40 xDrive carries a starting MSRP of $95,500 CAD. BMW has not yet announced pricing for the X5 50e xDrive or the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive. Reach out to BMW Montreal Centre for the most current pricing information as these models approach their Canadian launch.
