473 hp, 6-Speed Manual, Rear-Wheel Drive: Everything You Need to Know About the BMW M3 CS Handschalter
BMW M does not often hand enthusiasts exactly what they ask for. With the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter, that is precisely what has happened. BMW M has confirmed a limited-edition version of the M3 CS built around a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, giving the sixth generation's final act the kind of analogue edge that performance purists have been requesting for years. This is the first and only M3 CS ever produced with a manual gearbox.
The car is built exclusively for North America, with just 40 units allocated to Canada. Production begins in July, and Canadian deliveries are expected to arrive in the fall. The Handschalter is not a styling package or a trim-level adjustment. It carries model-specific chassis tuning, a weight reduction program built around carbon fibre reinforced plastic, and a powertrain calibration written from scratch to match the character of a rear-wheel-drive, manually shifted M3.
The Manual Gearbox and What It Changes
The 6-speed manual transmission at the centre of the Handschalter is not simply swapped in from another model. BMW M recalibrated the electronic control systems for the engine, chassis, steering, and gearbox specifically to suit the rear-wheel-drive layout and the driver's direct involvement in gear selection. The M Servotronic steering calibration is unique to this vehicle. The axle kinematics and wheel camber settings have been tuned to optimize cornering precision, steering feedback, and spring and damping response in a way that reflects the different weight distribution that comes with rear-wheel drive.
New springs and a revised rear axle link drop the ride height by 6mm compared to a standard M3. Shock absorbers developed for the M4 CSL are fitted here, along with auxiliary springs and a standard M Front End Strut Brace that braces the front chassis for sharper turn-in response. Every layer of the chassis setup has been written around this specific powertrain.
Power: 473 hp From the S58 Inline-6
The engine is the S58 M TwinPower Turbo 3.0 L inline-6, producing 473 hp at 6,250 RPM and 406 lb-ft of torque from 2,630 to 6,130 RPM. The S58 family is well known outside the M3: a close relation to this engine powered a BMW M4 GT3 Evo to class victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona this year.
The engine's closed-deck crankcase handles high combustion pressures with rigidity to spare. The forged lightweight crankshaft supports high revs, and the 3D-printed cylinder head core allows coolant routing that conventional casting cannot achieve. All 473 hp go to the rear wheels through the 6-speed manual, resulting in 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 290 km/h with the standard M Driver's Package.
| Engine Specifications | |
|---|---|
| Engine | S58 M TwinPower Turbo 3.0 L inline-6 |
| Output | 473 hp / 406 lb-ft of torque |
| Transmission | 6-speed manual, rear-wheel drive only |
| 0-100 km/h | 4.2 seconds (3.9 seconds with 1-foot rollout) |
| Top speed | 290 km/h (with M Driver's Package) |
Lightweight Design
The weight reduction program covers both the exterior and the interior. CFRP is used for the roof panel, hood, front splitter, front air intakes, mirror caps, rear spoiler, and rear diffuser. Inside, the centre console and interior trim are also CFRP. The titanium rear exhaust silencer saves more than 3.5 kg on its own.
Compared to a standard M3 with the 6-speed manual, the CFRP measures and titanium exhaust account for approximately 19 kg of weight savings. Adding the optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes cuts another 14 kg from the standard M Compound setup, bringing the total reduction to nearly 34 kg versus the base M3.
| Weight Reduction Source | Savings |
|---|---|
| CFRP body panels, interior trim, and titanium exhaust | ~19 kg vs. M3 with 6-speed manual |
| Optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes | Additional 14 kg |
| Total (with ceramic brakes) | Nearly 34 kg vs. standard M3 |
Interior and Technology
The M Carbon Bucket Seats are standard equipment, dressed in Black Full Merino Leather with Mugello Red Accents and Contrast Stitching, a finish reserved for BMW CS and CSL models. The seats are heated and electrically adjustable. A heated M Alcantara Steering Wheel is also standard, a specification not regularly available in the Canadian market.
M Drive Pro is included from the factory, combining M Drift Analyzer, M Laptimer, and M Traction Control with ten adjustable stages of intervention. The M Mode button on the centre console allows the driver to select ROAD, SPORT, or TRACK settings for the assistance and display systems. Comfort features include Comfort Access, dual-zone Automatic Climate Control, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, Head-Up Display with Video Augmented Reality Navigation, Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Park Distance Control.
Colours and Brakes
The M3 CS Handschalter is offered in four exterior finishes. Isle of Man Green Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic are available at no additional charge. Two BMW Individual colours drawn from 40 years of M3 history, Imola Red II and Techno Violet Metallic, are optionally available.
M Compound brakes are standard. Drivers seeking additional performance and weight savings may choose the optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes, available with calipers finished in either red or gold. Forged alloy wheels Style 927M in Gold Bronze or Matte Black are standard, sized at 275/35ZR19 front and 285/30ZR20 rear, with fitment options spanning high-performance, track, and ultra-track tires.
