30 xDrive or M50 xDrive? Your Most Common BMW X3 Questions, Answered

If you've been researching the BMW X3 and find yourself with a growing list of questions, you're in good company. It's one of BMW's most popular models -- and for good reason. Two very different variants, a fully redesigned interior, and a generation's worth of new technology make it worth taking the time to understand what you're actually getting before you walk into a dealership.

Here are the most common questions Montreal-area buyers ask about the BMW X3, answered in plain terms.

How Many Variants Does the BMW X3 Come In?

Two. The BMW X3 is available in the X3 30 xDrive and the X3 M50 xDrive. The naming convention is new -- BMW has dropped the letter "i" from model designations like "30i" and "M40i" and replaced it with a cleaner numbering format. Going forward, the "i" prefix is reserved exclusively for fully electric BMW models.

The 30 xDrive is the standard variant, powered by a 4-cylinder engine. The M50 xDrive is the high-performance version, built around a 6-cylinder engine with M-specific hardware throughout.

What Engines Do the Two Variants Use?

The X3 30 xDrive runs a 2.0 L TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with 48V mild hybrid technology that assists with throttle response and helps improve fuel efficiency during everyday driving.

The X3 M50 xDrive steps up to a 3.0 L TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine with a total system output of 393 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. This variant also uses 48V mild hybrid technology, but with an electric motor integrated directly into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission for faster, more direct power delivery. The 0--100 km/h time is 4.6 seconds. Both models send power to all four wheels through BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

What Is the 48V Mild Hybrid System?

It's a support system, not a standalone electric drive. The 48V mild hybrid adds a small electric motor to the powertrain that works alongside the combustion engine -- it can assist during acceleration to reduce load on the engine and recover energy during braking and coasting. You don't plug it in, and there's no EV-only driving mode. The benefit shows up in fuel consumption figures and in how responsive the car feels off the line.

How Much Cargo Space Does the BMW X3 Have?

Both variants share the same luggage compartment: 570 litres with all seats in place, expandable to 1,700 litres with the rear seats folded flat. Ground clearance of 216 mm gives adequate clearance for light off-road use and the variable road surfaces common across Montreal and the surrounding region.

Can the BMW X3 Tow a Trailer?

Yes, with an optional trailer hitch. Towing capacity depends on the variant: X3 30 xDrive: up to 4,001 lbs (1,815 kg); X3 M50 xDrive: up to 4,850 lbs (2,200 kg). The M50 xDrive's more powerful drivetrain supports a meaningfully higher rated load -- a relevant difference for drivers who regularly pull a watercraft, snowmobile trailer, or cargo trailer on weekends.

What Technology Is Inside?

The X3's cabin is centred around the BMW Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch touchscreen running BMW Operating System 9 with QuickSelect. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds to natural speech commands and displays contextual feedback on screen while you talk. Standard driver assistance includes Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, and the Parking Assistant with Backup Assistant.

What Are the Interior Seating and Upholstery Options?

Seating for five is standard on both variants, with electrically adjustable and heated sport seats as standard equipment. The base upholstery is Perforated and Quilted Veganza, available in three colour choices. Merino Leather is available as an upgrade on both models. The X3 M50 xDrive adds the option of an M Veganza/Alcantara combination in Black with Blue contrast stitching -- exclusive to this variant.

What Packages and Options Are Available?

The X3 30 xDrive comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels. The M Sport Package adds 20-inch M alloy wheels, M Sport brakes, and aerodynamic exterior detailing. On the X3 M50 xDrive, the illuminated kidney grille, M Sport brakes with blue-painted calipers, and quad tailpipe exhaust system are all standard from the factory.
