October 15, 2022 to February 19, 2023 - Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
Organized in collaboration with the Cité de la musique -- Philharmonie de Paris, Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music is the first large-scale multimedia exhibition devoted to the role of music in the work of one of the most innovative artists of the second half of the 20th century.
Music holds a prominent place in Jean-Michel Basquiat's painterly practice in the form of sign, symbol and sound. His oeuvre is replete with depictions of musical instruments alongside references to opera, classical music, jazz, bebop, hip-hop and rap. Presenting some 100 works by the artist together with numerous sound clips, film footage and archival documents, the exhibition provides an innovative in-depth look at Basquiat's career as a musician, the sounds that accompanied his mark-making and the musicians who inspired him, from Beethoven to the New York underground scene of the 1970s and 1980s and, notably, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Maria Callas.
Beginning with an exploration of the music that shaped Basquiat's New York, the exhibition sheds new light on his career as a performer and musician, notably with the band Gray. It also looks at his painting compositional techniques as they relate to music, and references his ties to particular record labels, musicians, cultures and sounds.
February 21 to March 12, 2023 -- Centaur Theatre
An autobiographical story of a gay man in his late 50's who thought his life was settled only to be thrown into a new world where he has to reimagine everything. This is Steve Galluccio's most personal play since Mambo Italiano.
Three old friends gather and reminisce about the past -- the good, the bad, and the outrageous. They talk about everything from boyfriends to Sunday night dinners, backed by a soundtrack of Blondie, the B-52s, and the Village People. Everything bubbles to the surface while memory and loss stir up questions about healing and moving on
With an open heart, Galluccio has penned a story about his own loves and losses in an unabashed love letter to Montreal. How do you remember your past? At the beginning of time… when everything is fresh and new. Galluccio's newest play reminds us that memories are like a good shot of espresso: best shared among friends.
February 15 to 19, 2023 -- La Tohu
A symphony of acrobatics, sound and light, this is next level circus by Circa.
Ten bodies appear in a flash of light. They move in harmony for a fleeting moment and then descend into a sinuous trance. Towers grow and decay, bodies leap and are caught, as physical limits are pushed to their extreme. Can we ever find a perfect balance or is adapting to constant change the only way forward? This next chapter of Circa's internationally acclaimed Humans is a tightly woven choreography of bodies, pulsing with music by composer Ori Lichtik and revealed in Paul Jackson's dramatic lighting. Created by circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Humans 2.0 is intimate, primal and deeply engaged with the challenge of being human.
February 02 to 04, 2023 -- La Tohu
In these two performances, Lontano and Instante, which have the Cyr Wheel as their totem, the two dancers and acrobats Juan Ignacio Tula and Marica Marinoni push the limits of the body, raising several questions: what is the place of our body today? Why do we choose to engage our bodies? Through the dialogue between flesh and wheel, Marica produces a poignant and hypnotic language before us. Rolling, risking, escaping, turning, deconstructing by dint of blows and falls: Lontano is a challenge to the storm of intoxication, a life impulse, and a hymn to resistance. In contrast, Juan, in the simplicity of a gyratory and repetitive movement, invites us on a dervish journey; from the blindness caused by the spirals arises the instinct of survival, where the body commits itself to the end, close to the point of inflexion where everything is infinite. Instante is the materialization of this journey to the center of oneself. These two solos are two sides of the same coin. Juan and Marica lead us to the edge of hypnosis, disrupting our relationship with time and offering us a mirror image of surpassing ourselves and humanity.
