A wind of hope blows with Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, one of the most famous works in the repertoire, which is shaped by the omnipresence of its initial four-note motif: the now-famous three short notes followed by a long, grandiose, and imposing one, which spreads through the orchestra like a rumor. Louise Farrenc's Symphony No. 3 demonstrates the full extent of the talent and formidable melodic inventiveness of this essential composer of the Romantic period of 19th-century musical Paris -- one of the rare female composers of her time to have achieved recognition from her peers during her lifetime -- whose repertoire is part of the legacy of Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn.
