Grand Prix du Canada 2022

June 17 to 19, 2022 -- Circuit Gilles Villeneuve/Île Notre-Dame

October 8, 1978: Montreal's first Grand Prix du Canada is held on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence. A native son, driving a Ferrari, wins his first world championship race. On that day more than three decades ago, Montreal, Ile Notre-Dame and its 4.5-kilometre track became more than a city, an island and a ribbon of pavement. They became Formula One holy ground. From year to year ever since, every June, tens of thousands of pilgrims have flocked to the island to watch the gods of motor racing. First there was Gilles Villeneuve. Then came Jones, Piquet, Mansell, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Hill, Alonso, Hamilton and others. They come to conquer. They keep building on the legend of this always-thrilling Grand Prix.https://www.gpcanada.ca/

Festival TransAmériques

May 25 to June 09, 2022 -- Various Location

Montreal's international festival combining both contemporary dance and contemporary theater, the Festival TransAmériques is three weeks of world and North American premiere performances by top choreographers, artistic directors, playwrights, actors and dancers. A relative newbie on the festival scene in Montreal, the Festival TransAmériques premiered in 2007, combining two festivals. Previously known as the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques, an all-theater festival going strong since 1985, the Festival TransAmériques added contemporary dance to the performance roster, picking up the slack where Montreal's contemporary dance event, the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse (defunct since 2003) left a void, to the dismay of Montreal's prominent dance community. And so a new festival was born with a particular focus on promoting contemporary dance and theater on the edge. https://fta.ca/en/

National Holiday (St. Jean Baptiste) -- Quebec's National Holiday

June 24, 2022 -- Various Locations

Saint Jean Baptiste Day, held annually on June 24, is the feast day of St. John the Baptiste, a Jewish preacher who baptized Jesus in the River Jordan. It is a day of celebration in Quebec and other areas of French Canada. Saint Jean Baptiste Day is also known as "la Saint-Jean", "St John the Baptist Day", "Fête Nationale du Québec" and "Quebec's National Holiday".

Various events are organized on Saint Jean Baptist Day. These range from large scale public celebrations, such as rock and jazz concerts, sports tournaments, parades and firework displays, to small family or neighborhood happenings, such as yard sales, picnics, barbecues, bonfires and children's entertainment. Many church bells ring in celebration and public dances and fun fairs are held. Some events may be held on the evening of June 23 and many are broadcast live on television, radio or on the Internet. The celebrations are coordinated by the Mouvement national des Québécoises et des Québécois.

Saint Jean Baptiste Day is a public holiday in the Canadian province of Quebec. Post offices and many stores are closed. Public transport services run to a reduced schedule in some places or may not run at all in other areas, such as the province's rural regions. If June 24 falls on a Sunday, the same day is a paid day off for those who work on Sunday. June 25 becomes a paid day off for workers who do not ordinarily work on Sunday.

Annie

June 22 to July 17, 2022 -- Théâtre Saint Denis

It is with great enthusiasm that Just for Laughs announces the production of the musical Annie. For the staging, Just for Laughs once again trusts Serge Denoncourt, after his brilliant collaborations with the company, including Les Choristes, Cyrano de Bergerac, The First Name and The Three Musketeers.

This Broadway classic takes us back to 1933 during the Great Depression. The charming and resourceful Annie, residing in a girl's orphanage in New York, lives a hard life and one day meets a billionaire who makes it his mission to help her find her parents. https://theatrestdenis.com/fr/spectacle/annie/

Sleeping Beauty (Grands Ballets Canadiens)

June 01 to 05, 2022 -- Place des Arts (Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier)

The story of the slumbering princess goes back several centuries and went through numerous versions before Perrault was inspired by an Italian tale to write what would become the Sleeping Beauty that we know today. The day of her christening, an infant princess receives a curse from the fairy Carabosse, whom no one invited to the fete; the fairy wishes for Aurora to prick her finger and die on the day of her 16th birthday. Fortunately, another fairy succeeds in easing the princess' plight by having her fall instead into a deep sleep of 100 years. Only true love's kiss will awaken her.

On Tchaikovsky's magnificent music, Les Grands Ballets visit Marius Petipa's classical ballet. While a rotating cast of characters unfold the story we all know, the Manichaean conflict between Good, the Lilac Fairy, and Evil, Carabosse, persists until the very end. https://placedesarts.com/en/event/sleeping-beauty

Mon île, mon Coeur (Circus)
