How far would you go, in the name of love? La Traviata, one of Verdi's -- and of the entire repertoire's -- most popular operas, introduces us to a kind of love both unbridled and doomed. Set in Paris in the 1920s, the incredible story of the courtesan Violetta is reimagined through a jazz-age entertainer who has taken the city by storm. Proving that we are never bound to a single path, nor to a single journey.
SELF-LOVE WILL NEVER BREAK YOUR HEART - Courtesan Violetta lives her life in a self-indulgent, proud, almost arrogant way. Until the very day when her eyes and her heart are cast on the young Alfredo, who comes from a prominent family. Ready to give up everything to fullfill their passionate romance, one they both believe they deserve, the couple challenges the beliefs and standards of their time.
May 30 to June 02, 2024 -- Place des Arts/Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
Giselle is heartbroken when she discovers that Albrecht, the man she loves, is in reality a nobleman betrothed to another woman. Devastated by grief and her intense feeling of yearning, the young peasant girl succumbs to madness and dies. She joins the ghostly spiritual wilis, young brides-to-be who have died before their nuptials and who condemn men to dance themselves to death.
What audiences connect with is the human element in the story: love, and betrayal in love, is a common, enduring theme. In Giselle, we see a young woman who not only realizes the truth, but by Act 2, she moves past that, and accepts her duplicitous lover.

A relative newbie on the festival scene in Montreal, the Festival TransAmériques premiered in 2007, combining two festivals. Previously known as the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques, an all-theater festival going strong since 1985, the Festival TransAmériques added contemporary dance to the performance roster, picking up the slack where Montreal's contemporary dance event, the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse (defunct since 2003) left a void, to the dismay of Montreal's prominent dance community. And so a new festival was born with a particular focus on promoting contemporary dance and theater on the edge.
