Carmen -- Les Grands Ballets Canadiens

October 20 to 23, 2022 -- Place Des Arts/Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier

Choreographer Étienne Béchard returns to Les Grands Ballets headlining a mixed program that will kick off the 66th season in force. First off, Carmen, a symbol of rebelliousness if ever there was one--will break happily from tradition, choreographed here to the Carmen Suite derived by Rodion Shchedrin from Bizet's opera.

In the second part of this music-inspired evening accompanied by Les Grands Ballets' Orchestra, Les Grands Ballets' dancer Kiara Flavin presents her first piece for the company, The Waves. Set to Stravinsky's Concerto for Violin and inspired by the eponymous novel by writer Virginia Woolf, which published at the same time as Stravinsky premiered his Concerto, in October of 1931. Two tumultuous pieces whose strength shape Flavin's piece. https://grandsballets.com/en/performances/detail/carmen/

Rock of Ages

October 27 to November 06,2022 -- Le Théâtre Saint Denis

Rock of Ages takes you back to the atmosphere of the 80s, when everything was larger than life, when we vibrated to the sound -- too loud -- of legendary rock bands, when dreams were big and hair was even crazier! Hits from Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx and more tell a story of shattered dreams on Hollywood's Sunset Strip. Barely off a bus from the Midwest, singer Sherrie Christian immediately finds herself in trouble. Drew, an employee of the legendary Bourbon Room nightclub, immediately comes to her rescue. Eyes full of promise, the young lovers set off in pursuit of their dreams, but a misunderstanding involving megastar Stacee Jaxx threatens to derail everything. https://espacestdenis.com/evenement/rock-of-ages/

October 11 to November 05, 2022 -- Centaur Théâtre

As we delve into the archives of theatre in Montreal you will be whisked between the two locales on a bus for an experience that asks the question, why are we so divided?

An exciting, historical event that joins two theatres: One English, one French, in a 360-degree view of our city. Brought to us by award-winning bilingual artist Laurence Dauphinais, this bilingual documentary theatre piece takes place in 3 locations: Centaur Theatre, Centre du Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui, and a bus -- complete with a tour guide -- that travels from one theatre to the next.

Like the beloved cycloramas of days gone by, this play offers audiences a panoramic look at the city and its history. https://centaurtheatre.com/shows/cyclorama/

Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music

October 15, 2022 to February 19, 2023 - Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

Organized in collaboration with the Cité de la musique -- Philharmonie de Paris, Seeing Loud: Basquiat and Music is the first large-scale multimedia exhibition devoted to the role of music in the work of one of the most innovative artists of the second half of the 20th century.

Music holds a prominent place in Jean-Michel Basquiat's painterly practice in the form of sign, symbol and sound. His oeuvre is replete with depictions of musical instruments alongside references to opera, classical music, jazz, bebop, hip-hop and rap. Presenting some 100 works by the artist together with numerous sound clips, film footage and archival documents, the exhibition provides an innovative in-depth look at Basquiat's career as a musician, the sounds that accompanied his mark-making and the musicians who inspired him, from Beethoven to the New York underground scene of the 1970s and 1980s and, notably, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Maria Callas.

Beginning with an exploration of the music that shaped Basquiat's New York, the exhibition sheds new light on his career as a performer and musician, notably with the band Gray. It also looks at his painting compositional techniques as they relate to music, and references his ties to particular record labels, musicians, cultures and sounds. https://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/exhibitions/jean-michel-basquiat/

Musée des Beaux-Arts Montréal

Until October 23, 2022 -- Du Musée Avenue

Every summer since 2013, the MMFA has been inviting local creative talent to design and execute an installation for the portion of Du Musée Avenue that gets converted into a pedestrian walkway. This year, you can discover a work by the artist Doras, produced by MU!

The art installation Niamh is inspired by the themes of nature and time present in Nicolas Party's exhibition L'heure mauve. It revisits the Irish legend of Niamh and Oisín in Tír na nÓg. On this paradisiacal island that is virtually immune to the ravages of time, three years is the equivalent of three hundred on Earth.

Niamh thus leads us to reflect on how we, as humans, come to terms with the passage of time. The installation also aims to bring an urban public closer to nature, and invites them to discover symbols of a realm of everlasting youth and natural beauty as they meander along the street.https://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/exhibitions/niamh/

** Activities & Events take place along the Du Musée Avenue throughout the summer **
